For employees making more than $150,000 per year, pay cuts of 17% or 20% were instituted. All employees making up to $150,000 per year were furloughed, with the length determined by each employees' salary. On April 17, 2020, the University of Arizona announced temporary pay cuts and furloughs to its 15,000 employees as its Tucson campus shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 1924, during Cloyd Marvin's tenure as president, the university was recognized by the Association of American Universities. Because there were no high schools in Arizona Territory, the university maintained separate preparatory classes for the first 23 years of operation. Construction of Old Main, the first building on campus, began on October 27, 1887, and classes met for the first time in 1891 with 32 students in Old Main, which is still in use today. With no parties willing to provide land for the new institution, the citizens of Tucson prepared to return the money to the Territorial Legislature until two gamblers and a saloon keeper decided to donate 40 acres to the Board of Regents. Tucson was largely disappointed with receiving what was viewed as an inferior prize. Flooding on the Salt River delayed Tucson's legislators, and by they time they reached Prescott, back-room deals allocating the most desirable territorial institutions had been made. Tucson hoped to receive the appropriation for the territory's mental hospital, which carried a $100,000 allocation instead of the $25,000 allotted to the territory's only university (Arizona State University was also chartered in 1885, but it was created as Arizona's normal school, and not a university). The Arizona Territory's " Thieving Thirteenth" Legislature approved the University of Arizona in 1885 and selected the city of Tucson to receive the appropriation to build the university. The official colors of the university and its athletic teams are cardinal red and navy blue.Īfter the passage of the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862, the push for a university in Arizona grew. UA athletes have won national titles in several sports, most notably men's basketball, baseball, and softball. Known as the Arizona Wildcats (often shortened to "Cats"), the UA's intercollegiate athletic teams are members of the Pac-12 Conference of the NCAA. Unlike past generations of adolescents, the baby boomers also commanded disposable incomes that could make Spider-Man a best seller.Īlthough it bears some resemblance to an “overnight sensation,” the web-slinger’s success was in fact carefully planned by his creators, Saunders explains. Spider-Man and Peter Parker were a grand metaphor for the angst, excitement, and transitions of adolescence itself, and 1960s teenagers-a brand-new category of person that rather suddenly evolved from the older concept of “kids”-readily identified. When Spider-Man appeared, he expanded the emotional scope of the whole superhero genre.” How Robin, for example, feels about being an orphan boy who finds himself with the weirdest stepdad ever plays no part in the narrative machinery of earlier Batman stories. “The interiority of the sidekick had not been of interest to the creators of comics in the 1940s and ‘50s. “They were breaking new ground by making Peter Parker’s adolescence the emotional center of their stories,” Saunders says. They’d continue to bedevil Spidey and frequently reappear in other Marvel titles over the decades. “To me, it really comes down to either Batman or Spider-Man.”įrom Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin to Kingpin and Kraven the Hunter, early issues of The Amazing Spider-Man introduced more than a dozen supervillains who proved to be nearly as popular as the hero himself. “Hardcore comic book nerds like to argue about which title produced the best rogues gallery,” Saunders confesses. What can account for Spider-Man’s out-of-the gate success and enduring appeal? According to these experts, it must come down to a variety of factors-but the most important may be Spider-Man’s underlying psychology, and his impressive list of enemies. The organizers anticipate that tens of thousands may also attend their new, one-character show. People will get to experience pieces of the fictional worlds of Spider-Man, and also learn the real-life history behind them.”Īn exhibit that Saunders and Reed previously worked on together, Marvel: Universe of Superheroes debuted at Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture in 2018 and met with sufficient acclaim to subsequently tour the country. “But we’ve also used modern, digital technologies and brought in something like a theme-park construct of world building. “Our show is rooted in classic museum structure-the power and resonance of the artifacts on display,” he says. He promises that visitors will not only be immersed in the world of classic and contemporary comic books-but can anticipate a large-scale, multi-media experience encompassing Spider-Man’s entire journey through the popular imagination: cinema, animation, gaming, collectibles, and much more. Reed is an events professional and independent pop culture historian. Saunders’ collaborator in the show’s creation, Patrick A. A well-penciled and inked comics page is, I think, some of the most beautiful art you can find.” “For several years my focus in curation has been getting this production art, which most of the public has never seen, onto gallery walls where it can be appreciated. “When you get to see the original artwork, the traditional distinctions between fine art and commercial art break down,” he says. The series editor for Penguin Classics’ historic new series of Marvel anthologies, Saunders also served as co-curator of the new exhibit, which features original art drawn for comics of all eras, plus thousands of unique artifacts spanning every facet of the hero’s lifetime in media. And the real-world narrative of Marvel is every bit as fascinating as the fictional, superhero worlds they’ve created.” “Some of the finest commercial artists in history have worked at Marvel, from the 1950s right up to the present day. Spider-Man: Beyond Amazing – the Exhibition opened July 1 at San Diego’s new Comic-Con Museum.Īccording to Ben Saunders, director of the University of Oregon’s comics and cartoon studies program, gallery walls are a fitting stage not only owing to the character’s status in popular culture-but also the genius of Spider-Man’s creators. Featured for decades in films, television, toys, video games, apparel, and innumerable other media, the iconic web-slinger’s latest stop is a major museum exhibition. Marvel quickly made him the star of his own title, establishing a classic character of the Silver Age of Comic Books. Created by the collaborative team of writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, Spider-Man was an instant sensation with readers. The wall-crawling crime-fighter was introduced to the world in August 1962, debuting in the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15. It’s truly amazing! Marvel’s Spider-Man turns 60 this year. Posted about my SAB listing a few weeks ago about not showing up in search only when you entered the exact name. “It can be up to seven different calls until you get to the last round.”īut that last round eventually came, and Joshua could feel a lump in his throat. “It’s a long, long, long process that starts with an audition and one or two callbacks them a screen test and network test,” he explains. “I’ve definitely been around the block with Disney auditions before but this one was different,” he recalls.Īfter getting through multiple callbacks and meeting with the show’s creator, Terri Minsky (creator of “Lizzie McGuire”) he was close but so, so far. “‘Oh, it’s okay to be me!’ It validates you when you see yourself on screen.”īut the entire process, he recalls, was “completely terrifying.” Though, at the age of 16, he’s already a Hollywood veteran (he was already on hit shows like “Heroes,” “Chuck,” “Private Practice,” and acting since he was 2-years old), auditioning for Cyrus, specifically was nerve-wracking. “Everybody should have the chance to see someone on TV and be like, ‘that’s me,’” he tells Very Good Light. Inclusivity, he says, is important – especially at a political climate like in 2018 – and getting a gay role down authentically, was essential. “We spent an hour and a half just talking about him recounting his coming out,” he says. With one friend specifically, he recalls asking intimate questions about gay identity and perspective. He’d call his past friends and ask them personal questions about their coming out stories. For months before his audition, he says he consulted with many of his gay friends. The role wasn’t one that Joshua took lightly. The powerfully nuanced story arc has been nominated for various awards and eventually winning 2018’s GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming as well as one from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. While in the first season, he has a girlfriend, he later comes into his own and eventually comes out to the world. On “Andi Mack,” Joshua plays Cyrus Goodman, the best friend of Andi Mack, a tween who discovers her sister is actually her mother. In fact, it was the first time a young character came out on the network. Playing a gay character on the Disney Channel was historic, a role that was extremely progressive – and completely bold – for a family-centric show. It’s only when you realize that the sentences muttered are coming out from a babyfaced teen and the fact that he’s also accompanied by his father, that brings you back to how young he actually is.įor being a consumer of news, Joshua has been in it quite often in the past year. He comes off completely, well, adult-like. He talks matter-of-factly, without spikes in his intonation. For being essentially a young person himself, Joshua is more Walter Cronkite than he is a teenager. “I’ve talked about all different kinds of subjects and deliver just facts – kids are going to be able to come up with their own opinions,” he says. Indeed, when I meet the precocious young person at his favorite coffee shop hidden in Culver City, in Los Angeles, he’s sounding off on politics – his main passion – and how “kids are scared of it – it’s very alienating.” His love of the news has led to his recurring Instagram video series, “News in a Rush,” where he dissects the day’s subjects in under a minute. The exchange subsidies are projected to nearly double over the next decade due to large premium increases in the near term and general health care cost growth in later years. This category includes subsidies for insurance purchased on the exchanges ($48 billion), veterans’ health care provided through the Department of Veterans Affairs ($70 billion), and health care for active-duty military and their dependents ($49 billion). Other spending on health insurance or health care totaled $167 billion in 2017. The two programs cost $391 billion in 2017 and are projected to cost $670 billion by 2028. On average, the federal government provides about 65 percent of total funding for Medicaid and 88 percent for CHIP, though CHIP’s share will fall to 65 percent by 2021. The federal government pays for 50 to 75 percent of base Medicaid costs, depending on the state, and 90 percent of costs for the expansion population. The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is a similarly structured program that covers almost 10 million children in a given year. Medicaid provides benefits for both acute and long-term care, covering nearly 100 million people over the course of a year. Medicaid is a state-run and jointly-financed health insurance program serving lower-income residents – including those making up to 138 percent of the poverty level in states that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Both factors will continue to grow beyond the end of the decade. This growth is due to both the aging of the population – the number of beneficiaries will rise from 58 million to 77 million – and growth in per-capita health spending – cost per beneficiary is projected to grow from $10,200 to $16,400. In dollars, net costs are projected to more than double over the next decade to $1.3 trillion in 2028. Medicare costs are expected to rise rapidly in the coming years. Medicare beneficiaries may enroll in some or all of these parts or in private insurance known as “Medicare Advantage” while still receiving a similar federal subsidy. Part A is funded primarily by a payroll tax while Parts B and D are funded through a combination of premiums and general revenue. Medicare consists of three programs: Part A covers hospital and inpatient care, Part B covers physician and outpatient care, and Part D covers prescription drugs. Medicare is the largest federal health care program, serving 58 million elderly and disabled people at a gross cost of $702 billion in 2017 and a cost net of premiums of $591 billion. These and other programs are discussed below. Most federal health care resources go toward financing four items: Medicare, Medicaid, the tax exclusion for employer-sponsored health insurance, and the exchange subsidies established under the Affordable Care Act. Based on Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projections and our own extrapolations, major federal health spending will rise from 5.4 percent of GDP in 2017 to 6.8 percent in 2028 and 8.4 percent by 2040. This growth is due to both automatic growth in enrollees and health care costs as well as health care expansions in the form of the Medicare prescription drug program and the Affordable Care Act.Īs the population ages and per-capita health care costs rise, nearly all forecasters expect federal health care spending to continue to grow. In dollar terms, major federal health spending has grown by 230 percent since 2000, while economy-wide prices have only risen 40 percent, and the economy has only grown by 90 percent. Spending on the major federal health programs – Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the health insurance exchange subsidies created under the Affordable Care Act – has increased from 0.8 percent of the economy in 1970 to 3.1 percent by 2000 and 5.4 percent in 2017 (total federal resources dedicated to health care, which include tax benefits as well, total about 8 percent of the economy). The Rise of Federal Health Spendingįederal health spending has grown significantly over the past several decades and is projected to grow in the future. It is the first in a series called the American Health Care initiative, a joint collaboration of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and the Concerned Actuaries Group. This paper will provide background on major health care programs in the federal budget. Given how central health care spending is to the federal budget, it is important to understand how that spending is distributed and how it will grow. Without a course correction, the result will be program insolvency, crowding out of important public priorities, and a growing federal debt. Over the long term, the rising cost of federal health care spending is clearly unsustainable. Continued abuse of our services will cause your IP address to be blocked indefinitely. The sulphur-crested cockatoo ( Cacatua galerita) is a relatively large white cockatoo found in wooded habitats in Australia, New Guinea, and some of the islands of Indonesia. Sulphur-crested cockatoo range (in red), introduced range (in violet) Some of the tools used in standardizing the 5S procedures are: job cycle charts, visual cues (e.g., signs, placards, display scoreboards), scheduling of "five-minute" 5S periods, and check lists. The three steps in this process are assigning 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine) job responsibilities, integrating 5S duties into regular work duties, and checking on the maintenance of 5S. Standardize, the method to maintain the first three pillars, creates a consistent approach with which tasks and procedures are done. Standardize. Once the first three 5S's have been implemented, the next pillar is to standardize the best practices in the work area. Strategies for effective Set In Order include painting floors, affixing labels and placards to designate proper storage locations and methods, outlining work areas and locations, and installing modular shelving and cabinets. Set in Order can only be implemented once the first pillar, Sort, has cleared the work area of unneeded items. Set In Order. Set In Order focuses on creating efficient and effective storage methods to arrange items so that they are easy to use and to label them so that they are easy to find and put away. Organizations often establish Shine targets, assignments, methods, and tools before beginning the shine pillar. These changes, if left unattended, could lead to equipment failure and loss of production. Working in a clean environment enables workers to notice malfunctions in equipment such as leaks, vibrations, breakages, and misalignments. Daily follow-up cleaning is necessary to sustain this improvement. Once the clutter that has been clogging the work areas is eliminated and remaining items are organized, the next step is to thoroughly clean the work area. Organizations often find that sorting enables them to reclaim valuable floor space and eliminate such things as broken tools, scrap, and excess raw material. Once the red tag items are identified, these items are then moved to a central holding area for subsequent disposal, recycling, or reassignment. A red tag is placed on all items that are not important for operations or that are not in the proper location or quantity. An effective visual method to identify these unneeded items is called "red tagging", which involves evaluating the necessity of each item in a work area and dealing with it appropriately. Sort. Sort, the first S, focuses on eliminating unnecessary items from the workplace that are not needed for current production operations. Method and Implementation ApproachĥS is a cyclical methodology: sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain the cycle. 5S provides the foundation on which other lean methods, such as TPM, cellular manufacturing, just-in-time production, and six sigma can be introduced. It also would result in the organization of tools and materials into labeled and color coded storage locations, as well as "kits" that contain just what is needed to perform a task. This lean method encourages workers to improve their working conditions and helps them to learn to reduce waste, unplanned downtime, and in-process inventory.Ī typical 5S implementation would result in significant reductions in the square footage of space needed for existing operations. In the daily work of a company, routines that maintain organization and orderliness are essential to a smooth and efficient flow of activities. The 5S pillars, Sort ( Seiri), Set in Order ( Seiton), Shine ( Seiso), Standardize ( Seiketsu), and Sustain ( Shitsuke), provide a methodology for organizing, cleaning, developing, and sustaining a productive work environment. Implementation of this method "cleans up" and organizes the workplace basically in its existing configuration, and it is typically the first lean method which organizations implement. 5S is a system to reduce waste and optimize productivity through maintaining an orderly workplace and using visual cues to achieve more consistent operational results. I rate episodes 1-62 a 10/10 because they follow the manga very well. It is there where the true story of Kenshin is continued and completed, and not with the later episodes. That is why after episode 62, I urge you to find the manga and start reading it from Volume 18 to enjoy the amazing story of Enishi and the Revenge Arc. However, by the time the manga finished, the fillers were so terribly bad that Rurouni Kenshin had to be cancelled. So as with all animes, they stopped animating the manga and aired fillers so the manga could develop. By the time the second arc had ended, the Kyoto arc, the anime had caught up to the manga. The only reason I advise you to avoid the episodes 63-95 is that they are pointless fillers. All of Kenshin's rivals also have unique personalities and Nobuhiro Watsuki has done an excellent job with them. Though its hinted at very slightly during the first two seasons, there is not much between them. The only qualm people may have is the lack of romance between Kenshin and Kaoru. An example of this is the development of Yahiko from an innocent child to an exceptional swordsman throughout the show. The character development during the anime is portrayed very well. You will either hate the characters or love them. This is especially the case during the second season as Iwasaki unveils a multitude of amazing pieces of music that you will undoubtedly look to download. Taku Iwasaki has done a beautiful job with the soundtrack to Rurouni Kenshin as during each and every part, there is the perfect song that fits the scene. To some of the younger fans out there, the animation may seem a bit older and not as new as some of our recent anime like Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist, it still is drawn with very exceptional quality and after the first few episodes, you find that the style perfectly suits the time frame in which the story takes place. The second season is where the plot develops and we are introduced to a little bit of Kenshin's past. Without giving too much away, the first season is based on his stay with Kaoru Kamiya and how he keeps his vow of not to kill. The first two seaons depict the story of Himura Kenshin, also known as Hitokiri Battousai, and his motley bunch of friends in Sagara Sonouske, Myojin Yahiko, and Kamiya Kaoru. There are a total of 95 episodes to Rurouni Kenshin, however, only the first 62 (the first two seasons) are only worth watching because the third season is all fillers. Everything from romance, action, suspense, and even some thriller in included in Rurouni Kenshin. The story is deep, intricate, emotional, and touching. anime somehow and start watching it, you won't be disappointed if you are into samurai. If you are one of the younger anime fans out there and haven't heard too much about Rurouni Kenshin (also known as Samurai X in other countries outside of the United States), I urge to immediately to get your hands on a copy of the If you're one of the older anime fans, chances are that you probably have seen this anime already and give it the respect that it deserves. Rurouni Kenshin - an amazing anime taking place during the Japan Revolution - is an amazing story first written by Nobuhiro Watsuki in 1994 and first aired as an anime in 1996. However, as enemies from both past and present begin to emerge, will the reformed killer be able to uphold his new ideals? Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan tells the story of Kenshin as he strives to save those in need of saving. After receiving help from Kenshin, Kaoru allows him to stay at the dojo, and so the former assassin temporarily ceases his travels. One day, he stumbles across Kaoru Kamiya at her kendo dojo, which is being threatened by an impostor claiming to be Battousai. Vowing never to kill again, Kenshin dedicates himself to protecting the weak. Unbeknownst to them, Battousai has abandoned his bloodstained lifestyle in an effort to repent for his sins, now living as Kenshin Himura, a wandering swordsman with a cheerful attitude and a strong will. It has been ten peaceful years since then, but the very mention of Battousai still strikes terror into the hearts of war veterans. Feared as a merciless killer, he was unmatched throughout the country, but mysteriously disappeared at the peak of the Japanese Revolution. In the final years of the Bakumatsu era lived a legendary assassin known as Hitokiri Battousai. |
